Why Tire Pressure Changes with Tire Size
When you switch to a different tire size—especially during a plus-size upgrade—the correct air pressure often needs adjustment. This is because tire load capacity depends on both the pressure and the tire's physical dimensions.

General Pressure Guidelines by Vehicle Type
- Passenger cars: Typically 30-35 PSI for standard loads
- SUVs / Crossovers: Typically 33-38 PSI, higher for loaded conditions
- Trucks: Often 35-45 PSI depending on load range (C, D, E)
- Performance cars: May run 32-36 PSI for optimal grip; some track setups go higher
How Size Changes Affect Pressure
- Wider tires: A wider tire at the same pressure creates a larger contact patch. To maintain similar load capacity, you can often run 1-2 PSI less per 10mm of width increase.
- Lower aspect ratio: Shorter sidewalls have less air volume and flex. They typically need 1-2 PSI more to carry the same load without excessive sidewall stress.
- Larger rim diameter: Often combined with lower aspect ratios. The net effect depends on whether overall diameter changed significantly.
Temperature and Seasonal Adjustments
For every 10°F change in ambient temperature, tires gain or lose approximately 1 PSI. Check pressure in the morning before driving for the most accurate reading. In winter, consider adding 3-5 PSI if temperatures drop significantly, as long as you stay within the tire's maximum pressure rating (molded on the sidewall).
