Why Tire Rotation Matters
Tire rotation is one of the simplest and most cost-effective maintenance tasks you can perform. By moving tires to different positions on your vehicle, you ensure that wear is distributed evenly across all four tires. This extends tire life, improves handling, and maintains warranty coverage.
Most manufacturers recommend rotating tires every 5,000 to 8,000 milesβroughly every oil change. How Drivetrain Affects Tire Wear
- Front-Wheel Drive (FWD): Front tires carry most of the weight (engine + transmission) and handle steering, braking, and acceleration. They wear 2-3x faster than rear tires.
- Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD): Rear tires handle acceleration, while front tires handle braking and steering. Wear is more balanced but still uneven.
- All-Wheel Drive (AWD): Power is distributed to all wheels, but front tires still wear faster due to steering and weight distribution.
- 4-Wheel Drive (4WD): Similar to AWD when engaged, but often operates in 2WD mode. Follow the same patterns as RWD for part-time systems.
Tire Types and Rotation Limitations
- Non-directional tires: Can be rotated to any position. Most flexible option.
- Directional tires: Have a tread pattern designed to rotate in one direction only. Can only be moved front-to-back on the same side.
- Staggered fitments: Front and rear tires are different sizes. Can only be rotated side-to-side (if non-directional) or not at all.
- Directional + Staggered: Cannot be rotated. These tires must stay in their original position.

- Standard rotation: Every 5,000 - 7,500 miles
- High-performance tires: Every 3,000 - 5,000 miles
- Trucks / SUVs with heavy loads: Every 5,000 miles
