Understanding Tire Wear and Tread Depth
Tire tread depth is one of the most important safety indicators on your vehicle. As tires wear down, their ability to channel water away, maintain grip, and stop quickly diminishes dramatically.
Most new tires start with 10/32" to 12/32" of tread depth. As you drive, the rubber gradually wears away through friction with the road surface. Use our calculator above to estimate when you'll need replacements, and use our rotation pattern calculator to extend tire life.
When to Replace Your Tires
The legal minimum tread depth in the United States is 2/32 of an inch. However, safety experts strongly recommend replacing tires before they reach this limit:
- 6/32" or less: Replace before winter. Tires need adequate tread to grip snow and slush. Winter tires should have even more tread depth.
- 4/32" or less: Replace for wet weather safety. At 4/32", hydroplaning risk increases significantly, and wet stopping distances can be much longer.
- 2/32" or less: Replace immediately. This is the legal minimum, but performance is severely compromised. Use the quarter test: insert a quarter into the tread groove.
How to Measure Tread Depth
- Tread depth gauge: The most accurate method. Insert the probe into the tread groove and read the measurement. Check multiple points across the tire.
- Penny test: Insert a penny with Lincoln's head down. If you can see the top of his head, your tread is at or below 2/32".
- Quarter test: Insert a quarter with Washington's head down. If you can see the top of his head, your tread is at or below 4/32".
- Tread wear indicators: Most tires have built-in wear bars at 2/32". When the tread is flush with these bars, it's time to replace.
Factors That Accelerate Tire Wear
- Improper inflation: Under-inflated tires wear on the edges. Over-inflated tires wear in the center. Check pressure monthly with our pressure calculator.
- Wheel misalignment: Causes uneven wear patterns like feathering or camber wear. Get alignment checked annually.
- Imbalanced tires: Causes cupping or scalloped wear. Balance tires when mounting new ones.
- Hard driving: Frequent hard braking, acceleration, and cornering wear tires faster.
- Climate and road conditions: Hot climates, rough roads, and gravel accelerate wear.
- Vehicle weight: Heavy vehicles and frequent towing put more stress on tires.
